One of the most daunting tasks of a homeowner can be keeping those sills and window tracks clean. Especially when it comes to sliding glass doors. We’ve all been there, the door won’t slide smoothly; the slider gets stuck. What a pain! While it’s not a fun job to clean, it can be easy if you follow these steps:
First of all, you need to gather your materials. Most of these items are already lying around your home!
- Vacuum including brush attachment
- Soft cleaning brush or toothbrush
- Spray bottle with water
- Sponge or cloth
- Vinegar, dish soap and baking soda (optional-to enhance cleaning)
Addintional Helpful Cleaning Tips
First use your vacuum to get the dirt out of the windowsill or slider track. This will give you a better base to clean with as well as suck up any bugs or other materials that may be there.
Next get your spray bottle ready. For a little extra oomph, you can add some vinegar or dish soap to the water in a spray bottle. You may want to sprinkle some baking soda on the window tracks or sill first to help remove the embedded dirt. However if your windowsill is made of wood you want to use very few chemicals and as little water as possible. Lucky for us Floridians most sliding glass doors are fiberglass or aluminum in material.
Once you have sprayed the windowsill take your sponge or cloth and wipe up the dirt. You may need to use a cotton ball or a Q-tip in the harder to reach corners. You should keep a bucket of clean water handy so that you can rinse out your dirty sponge from time to time.
Lastly, take a dry cloth and wipe the excess moisture away leaving a nice clean and shiny window sill.
